A message for Leaders of National Evangelical Alliances, Regional General Secretaries, and WEA Members
As we approach the upcoming World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) General Assembly, we wish to ensure that all members are fully informed and prepared to participate effectively in the governance of our global fellowship that will take place during the business meeting. In keeping with the WEA Constitution and By-Laws, please take careful note of the following important matters:
1. Notice Period for Agenda Items
1.1 Constitutional Amendments:
Any proposal to amend the WEA Constitution requires six (6) months’ written notice specifying the proposed amendments. This notice must be provided in advance of the General Assembly to all members entitled to vote.
1.2 By-Law Amendments:
Any amendments to the By-Laws proposed by members (and not by the International Council) require three (3) months’ written notice to the Secretary General.
Please take note that the notice period for amendments is different for the constitution and for the By- Laws. Our Constitution has these segments separate but often mistakenly taken as one document.
1.3 General Agenda Items:
The draft agenda will be circulated to all members (voting and non-voting) at least sixty (60) days before the Assembly.
Members may submit additional agenda items to the Secretary General at least three (3) weeks prior to the commencement of the Assembly.
2. Delegate and Leadership Eligibility
To ensure integrity and compliance with our governance processes:
Regional and National Voting:
Please confirm that your Regional or National Alliance has conducted the necessary voting and selection processes for your delegation to the General Assembly.
2.1 Nominee Requirements:
Leaders presented at the General Assembly as eligible for election or selection to the International Council (IC) or other prescribed roles will be nominees from Regional Alliance. ”Nominations will be made in the following proportions: one nominee from each Regional Alliance, selected from nominations received from its affiliated National Alliances. After the election of such regionally-nominated members the Council may present for election, and the Voting Members may thereupon proceed to elect, further nominees to achieve a better representation on the Council of sex, age, ministry or other considerations which representation has not been achieved by the election of members already elected by region.” Regional and National Alliances must therefore come prepared to nominate additional members who may contribute to a better representation of skills and competencies that may not be represented by the initial IC member nominations required by our constitution.
2.2 Approval by Voting Member:
All candidates for IC membership must be in good standing with, and formally approved by, their respective voting member (National or Regional Alliance).
3. Eligible Delegates for Voting and Participation
3.1 Voting Rights:
Only National and Regional Alliances have voting rights at the General Assembly. These are referred to as Voting Members.
3.2 Delegation Limits:
Each Voting Member may appoint up to three (3) delegates, but only one (1) vote is allocated per Voting Member.
3.3 Notification Requirement:
The names of your voting delegates must be submitted through this form before the commencement of General Assembly business meeting.
3.4 Non-Voting Members:
Affiliate Members, Trans-national Denominations, and Church Networks are welcome and encouraged to participate but do not have voting rights.
4. Members in Good Standing
For the purposes of participation in the General Assembly business session, members in good standing are those who:
- Continue to subscribe to the WEA Statement of Faith in writing.
- Comply with WEA membership requirements and uphold the purposes and objectives of the Alliance.
- Have not been suspended by the International Council for reasons including doctrinal violation, unresolved allegations, or non-payment of membership fees.
- Are current in their membership contributions and not in arrears for more than three years.
We appreciate your careful attention to these constitutional requirements and your cooperation in ensuring that the General Assembly operates in an orderly, lawful, and God-honoring manner.
