The WEA is grateful for inspired leaders and servants in the Korean church who have stepped forward to host our 2025 General Assembly. The Seoul Organizing Committee includes representatives of different Korean denominations, with Rev. Jung-hyun John Oh, senior pastor of Sarang Church, part of the Presbyterian (Hapdong) denomination, and Rev. Young-hoon Lee, senior pastor of Yoido Full Gospel Church and member of the Assemblies of God, as co-chairs.
Additionally, the WEA’s national alliance is the Korean Evangelical Fellowship (KEF), a fellowship united in evangelical belief for cooperation in the Korean church. The current chairman of the KEF is Rev. Seok-soon Im. KEF's former vice-chairman, Rev. Sang-bok David Kim, was senior pastor of Hallelujah Church and chaired the WEA’s International Council from 2008 to 2012.
The KEF was founded in 1981. Their founding members were senior pastors from significant churches such as Rev. Jun-gon Kim (Gwangju Seohyun Church), Rev. Jo-joon Park (Bundang Calvary Church), Rev. Han-hum Oak (Seoul Sarang Church) and Rev. Yong-jo Ha (Seoul Onnuri Church).
South Korea has one of the largest Christian populations in East Asia and boasts some of the largest churches in the world by church numbers as well as attendance. It is a strategic mission force not only in Asia but around the world. Since the mid-20th century, the Korean church has grown dramatically. From a mere 2% of the population in 1945, the evangelical community has grown to approximately 30%. There are between 55,000 and 60,000 churches in Korea today. Korean evangelicalism has exhibited a strong connection between head and heart, characterized by a high esteem for the Bible and coupled with a deep spirituality that grows out of devoted prayer.
Grateful for all that God has done, the Korean church seeks to reciprocate and share with all nations the blessings it has received from God. As the co-chairs of the Seoul Organizing Committee have stated, “It is time for us to commit ourselves with the same spirit of martyrdom as the servants of God’s divine history. Our mission is not only to strengthen the Korean church but also to lay the foundation for global discipleship training and world evangelization."
